There are times when weather forecasts never gets it right. It rains when they say it’s going to be a sunny day, and doesn’t when they tell you to bring your umbrella with you. Safe to say that no one is every ready for a down pour. However, when you know that the wet season have already stepped in, don’t wait for the forecast to tell you to be prepared. Make a conscious effort to watch out for yourself and take note of the following to avoid those usual road problems during rainy days.
Tires
What part of your car touches the wet road? Yes, the tires. That’s why before you mind anything else, make sure that they’re properly inflated. Not over-inflated or under-inflated, just right. Fail to do this and you’ll surely lose control over your car on a slippery road.
Tread
You can pretty much tell if your car’s tires have already worn out by their tread. You either do the Coin Tire Tread Test or opt for those tires with “wear bars” that they’re selling in the market, which helps you determine if the wear have already reached the 1.6mm minimum.
Tire Change
The rear tires of a car is what stabilizes it so that the car won’t spin when steering or braking while driving on wet road. So instead of changing the front tires, it’s actually the rear tires that you should change first when changing tires in pairs.
Safe Driving
It’s not a good idea to see how fast you can drive during rainy days. This is especially true when there’s a lot of those gritty rainbow film on the road which can cause you to slip uncontrollably when you pass by it.
Drive Smoothly
Take extra precaution when driving in the rain. The turns that you can easily do even at sleep can be extremely dangerous when it’s raining.
Maintain your Distance On The Road
Damp roads makes it trickier to maneuver a car. It would be safer for you to maintain a reasonable distance from the car in front of you. This will allow you to deviate or brake immediately during those critical moments.
Avoid The Water Build Up On the Road
Avoid being veered to the gutter by staying away from the extreme sides of the road where the water tends to build up.
Hold The Brake
If you’re in a situation where you have no other choice but to pass through a flooded area, proceed by stepping on the brake pedal really hard until it bites a little. Keep your foot on the brake as you drive slowly and steadily.
Proper Lights
Low Beams
If the visibility is already low, turning your low beams as well as your rear fog lights will help you get through.
High Beams
You don’t want to dazzle other drivers in an already blurry visibility by turning your high beams on.
Hazard Lights
If you’re absolutely sure that you can’t go on anymore, that’s the time to hit your hazard lights. Otherwise, you’ll only be sending the wrong signal to your fellow drivers which could do harm than good.
Aside from all these, making sure that your car is always in good condition through regular car grooming will also prevent you from being stuck in the middle of the road in a rainy day.
